Platelet-rich plasma is also known as PRP, and is commonly referred to as stem cell therapy as well.
As science advances, we learn more about the body and the many ways the body heals itself and can be induced into healing. PRP is one of those breakthrough advancements. PRP therapy has had a few twists and turns as science has tried to understand more fully how the body's many specialties work. That being said, PRP is a very powerful way to help the body heal in ways that are natural, safe, and realistic.
What Is Platelet-Rich Plasma?
Plasma is the liquid portion of the whole blood, comprising proteins, water, and nutrients like platelets. The plasma is isolated from the red blood cells via a centrifuge. This separates the plasma from the red blood cells. The plasma is made up of different layers that contain some of the different nutrients. The platelet-rich layer is located near the bottom of the plasma after it has been spun down.
PRP therapy uses the patient's own concentrated plasma from their body. The process of drawing the blood is performed just like any blood draw. When doing PRP, we will draw a few vials of blood depending on the area of treatment. Centrifuge the blood to concentrate the plasma, remove it, and prepare it for injecting back into the injured tissue.
The PRP, once activated, releases growth factors back into the tissue, which stimulates healing. The platelets are key to PRP therapy. They are famous for clotting blood, but we now know they are also responsible for activating stem cells. In fact, they are responsible for releasing over 1,500 growth factors and proteins that have been documented to facilitate wound healing and tissue repair. There are proprietary ways to help assist the body in activating the growth factors and getting the growth factors to activate the stem cells. This is the biggest piece of good news...we can activate and guide stem cells to injured areas to heal the body.
What Are Stem Cells?
Stem cells are cells with the potential to develop into many different types of cells in the body. They serve as a repair system for the body. They have always been there, working to repair your scratches, once as a kid or a broken arm as a teenager. So what's the big deal? The big deal is that they can be collected and activated and then injected into any injured area or scarred tissue. They then become the injured tissue and repair with permanent regenerative benefits. Meaning they become the tissue you inject them into. They are completely safe and have been researched for years.
Stem cells are the natural way your body heals wounds and injuries, and we can now activate them and guide their use in the body.
